SIBAT

Who We Are

Sibol na Agham at Teknolohiya, Inc. (SIBAT) is an advocate, developer, mover and groundbreaker of appropriate technology for rural development, guided by the principle of making science and technology (S&T) serve the Filipino people.

Appropriate Technology (AT) is meant to genuinely respond to the needs of poor communities and results in their real socio-economic benefits as well as to the environment.

AT is SIBAT's main tool in pursuing its development mission to target communities. SIBAT's core technological competencies are community-based sustainable agriculture (CBSA) and community-based renewable energy systems (CBRES), which it has pioneered in non-government organization (NGO) and people's organization (PO) led development work.

SIBAT is an advocate of relevant S&T, participatory technology development, and AT systems within community-based models of rural development. Presently, SIBAT pursues the development of the village level sustainable development (VLSD) model which comprises the core objective of SIBAT's 10-year Strategic Plan (2003 - 2012). VLSD is basically a community-based model of integrating AT components spawned by community plans and participatory research - through NGO-PO-SIBAT collaboration in the context of the POs struggle for land and resources. CBSA (with focus on diversified integrated farming systems in respective typological contexts), supported by CBRES, constitute the basic technological components of this model.

SIBAT does AT development and integration, and pursues innovation to competently and adequately respond to development needs of communities. It spearheads research, experimentation, innovation and replication in the specific fields of sustainable agriculture and renewable energy to improve on its technologies and practices.

SIBAT works closely with poor communities in making technologies relevant and responsive to local needs and conditions. It promotes the building of capabilities of communities and development partners while upholding technological mastery.

SIBAT aims to reach and involves farmers, women and indigenous peoples in its appropriate technology projects. To do this, SIBAT works closely and directly with local NGO and PO partners from across all sectors to spur these projects.

SIBAT is and AT convenor and policy advocate. It gathers members of NGO-PO community to share innovations, advance positive experiences, tackle development issues pertinent to technology, and facilitates inter-NGO/PO collaboration on appropriate technology. Along with the NGO-PO community, it advocates AT to government and encourages its support.

SIBAT is an advocate and mover of technological forces supporting its mission. Through volunteering, SIBAT mobilizes students, professionals and academe to contribute their time and skills for relevant service and development work.

SIBAT is a reliable partner for genuine development with a mission to serve S&T for the people.
